The study of the kidneys, in particular normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease—from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy—are the focus of the subspecialty of adult internal medicine and paediatric medicine known as nephrology.

When should I consult a nephrologist?

• You should see a nephrologist if you have any signs of kidney disease or other conditions that may damage your kidneys. During your appointments, your nephrologist will examine your medical history, order tests and treat your condition.
